Juneau, Alaska
2021
This project establishes an Alaska Native cultural space in the heart of downtown Juneau, featuring arts instruction studios and a large performance venue. It celebrates Native culture in many forms through architecture, landscape, and the use of plant species indigenous to the region. Along Marine Way, the landscape evokes a beach landing, with wild rye plantings set among rocky cobbles and punctuated by striking totems. Along Front Street, upland landscapes suggest a mixed forest edge, with berry plantings anchored by Alaska yellow cedar and nestled among boulders. Throughout the site, plantings highlight enduring cultural connections to species that have been used by generations. (Top and Bottom Photos by Joe McCabe Photography, Middle Photo by Zane Jones)
